"God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching" (1 Corinthians 1:21, NET Bible).
The spoken word lingers in the air only for a second, then it is gone. The history of God's work in the world attests to the power of God to use something so transitory and temporary as a spoken word to establish something substantial and enduring as the Church. Preaching is the way God has chosen to nourish the soul of his beloved people; "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." Preaching is for the skeptic too because "faith comes by hearing."
